This is poor mans 3G, and I maybe charge $25 dollar to make it work for some people later when I can write a program for it, and I will post video link later to prove my phone DOES work.
I know this is old, but G1 + sidekick plan does work, at least on my old G1 it work.Ĩ080 port block is real, and I do get around it to make it work. But on that setup, Opera Mini will be the only application that has network access.

You can download Opera Mini from the android market wich connects thru a socks proxy by default and it will work right out of the box. The process of getting it all to work is a lil technical. Never let anyone tell you something not possible.

but who cares? I've got full free wireless internet in my hand where ever i go. Granted i have no voice, and no SMS access. The prepaid sim card is loooooooong ago expired. i used connectbot to create a dynamic socks proxy on my home server, and setup the socks proxy on android and bingo. blocking internet access on devices means only blocking access to their DNS servers. So i pulled up the terminal emulator on the rooted g1 and started doing ping tests. When the sim came, i setup my account on the tmobile webpage, installed the sim card. I got a rooted g1, ordered a prepaid sidekick simcard from the t-mobile website. I've been testing a setup like this for several months now. The person above was halfway correct when they said "T-Mobile will not allow this". At work there are lots of young people with Blackberries and Motorola Q's and when I ask them how is the internet on that, they tell me "oh I couldn't afford it so I shut off the data plan." And what good is having a smartphone with no data plan? If you can't afford $65 a month for a phone then you need a free phone. I jumped on when they had 1000min for $39.
You will of course have to get a voiceplan, but you said you won't use it much so get 600 for $39 at 15 cents a min that is 260 min for $39 it is a better deal for the plan they already offer.
Save $5 and limit your texts or spend $5 more and get unlimited w/3g and hotspot. The unlimited text plan for the G1 is $35 if you want 400 texts it is $25 what are you really saving here? And with the G1 plan you get unlimited hotspot at all the Starbucks and Barnes & Nobles and unlimited 3G. also even if they did block it, how about if I unlocked the phone first? would it then work?Īnd last question, what do you think the data speed is on sidekick prepaid? GPRS, EDGE, 2G OR 3G? My question is, will it work on the G1? Or is T-mobile smart enough to block it somehow. I won't even make calls that much so I'm not too concerned I just like the $30/mo. Hey guys I'm tempted to sign up for this Sidekick plan $1/day for unlimited text IM email & web browsing.
